Word97 displaying gibberish

In Word 97, on one computer only, we see gibberish in documents such as ++BB++, along with font info, author name for that doc, etc.
The same file, viewed by another pc with Word97 shows correctly.
On the problem computer the Print Preview shows the doc correctly, not the extra gibberish.
Any ideas?

When you go to open the document, check what it is trying to open - it sounds like you've got the 'recover text from any document' type selected. Make sure youre opening a word document.
