I have some standard dotx templates I use from a server share. We recently decommissioned the server these were stored on.

My problem is when I open a document created from one of those templates, I see a message in the status bar "Contacting \\....\... for information. Press ESC to cancel.". I have to press ESC or there's a pretty long timeout. This suggests that Word by default saves documents with a link to the original template.

Does anyone know how to turn that off? Also, does anyone know how to remove that link from existing documents?

You can't turn it off; every Word document has an attached template. And this performance issue with network paths has been a problem for a long time.

The first place Word looks for a template is the same directory as the document, where it tries to find a template with the same name (but not path) as the attachewd one. Only if it doesn't find one locally does it try to follow the path.

So, if you can create a new template in the folder with your documents, the problem will ease. That new template could have Document_Open code that changed the attached template, if you wanted.

Enjoy,
Tony
