Word2000 stall in Win98

Dell Inspiron 5000 64Mb
Office 2000 Pro on Win98
Worked well for a year. Nimda worm infection cleaned up in early Sept.
As of yesterday (no new apps installed or changes made), Word 2000 freezes at splash screen, whether an existing file was doubleclicked or a New word doc is requested.
Tried Repair option on Office 2000 CD. No joy.
Norton Antivirus shows no infections.
Norton Windoctor shows no problems.
Norton Diskdoctor shows no problems.
Uninstalled Office 2000, ran Windoctor, reinstalled. No joy.
Reinstalled Windows 98, uninstalled Office 2000, and reinstalled, No joy.
Any suggestions?
