When I try to set the paper size in Word to 4" x 6", I get the following error message:
Settings you chose for the left and right margins, column spacing, or paragraph indents are too large for the page width in some sections.
This is for a new empty document. I used to be able to do this. What and where do I have to change?

Hi webrabbit,

Don't know if this will help, but almost every time I get that message while trying to print, I click OK to get past it and everything prints okay despite the warning. Give it a try and let us know.

This is not when I'm trying to print, but when I'm trying to change the paper size. I sometimes get a similar message when I'm trying to ptint, I click "OK" and it prints just fine. But in this case, I get the error message when I click "OK" for the paper size. I can only continue if I cancel the paper size change, which defeats the whole purpose of using Word to print the text.

I duplicated your message.

FIRST, with my 8 1/2 x 11 page size, I set left & right margins ot 2.1

Everything is fine.

Now I select a 4 x 6 paper size.

TILT!!! Got your message, and GUESS WHAT? The message was CORRECT! I need to modify my margins!!!

What's wrong with that?

Skip,

for a NUANCE![tongue]

The only thing wrong with that is that the margins are .5", not 2.1".

If it were that obvious, it would not have been a problem.

Then try to check other paper settings, like top and bottom margins, position of header/footer, 2 pages per sheet/book fold (that will make for twice the margines), columns, etc.
All of them could be the reason of your error.

Also make sure that your custom size is supported by your default printer.

I have checked all that, and yes, a custom size is supported by my printer. It used to work from Word, but dosen't any more. It works with other apps, even DOS apps. Somehow the columns default in Word changed to two; my son told me how to change it back to one in Normal.Dot. That didn't solve the problem though. There's something else that needs to be changed, but I can't figure out what or where.

There are several settings that could conflict and you'll need to check them all. For starters, the margins in the document body, or the header, or footer, could be wrong. The 'empty' document could have multiple sections. I'm afraid it's just a painstaking process of looking at everything. As a short cut, if your Normal template contains nothing of consequence, you could try renaming it and letting Word create a new one based on its built-in defaults.

Enjoy,
Tony

That seemed like it would be the answer, but it didn't work.

Thank you for sending that to me. The problem is that you have an explicit column width set.

This is not exactly obvious, but there is a check box on the Format > Columns dialogue labeled "Equal column width". When you have a single column, it may be checked or unchecked, but it is greyed out. When it is checked it means, essentially, calculate the column width(s) based on other factors (page width, etc.). When it is unchecked it means use the stated width and calculate other settings based on this.

As you have this box unchecked, Word calculates a column width of 7.5" + left and right margins of 0.5" each, making a minimum page width of 9.5", and it won't let you change the page width to any lower value.

If you choose one of the multi-column presets in the Format > Column dialogue, Word will set this checkbox accordingly if it considers it relevant: click on "Two" and it will check it, click on "Left" and it will uncheck it. Word does not consider it relevant when you choose "One"; this is probably correct but it should not then grey it out and, frankly, I consider this a bug.

However it was that your column settings got changed in the first place, that check box got unchecked and when you changed it back to one column you did not check it (you couldn't!). The solution is to go back and change your Normal.dot: in the dialogue, first click on "Two" to force the checkbox to be checked, and then click on "One" to change back to one column, and Word will not change the checkbox. You will then have it set to using a single column that fits within the page, and you should be able to change your page width as before.

Enjoy,
Tony

Glad to hear it worked out. I posted two links showing that if you Google the specific error you were getting that the recommended remedy was to check the box Equal Column Width, I was wondering if you were going to give it a shot.
