Word -to- PDF (acrobat 5) convertion issues (slow image scrolling)

I am using MSword 2000/2003 and Acrobat 5. I am embedding transparent gifs (or pngs) into my document, which allows my text to wrap around the critical parts of the image.

However, when I convert it to PDF, the pdf scrolls very slowly on pages that have that image. It sometimes takes 5-10 seconds to load that image and page.

Any possible solutions?
