Hi,

I'm attempting to create a letterhead template in Word 2000, but I'm having problems with the Header & Footer repeating on the 2nd/3rd/etc. page.

After referring to the Word Help System, I discovered the following suggestion:

Code:
To set up different headers or footers for odd and even pages — or for a different first page — insert a manual page break in the one-page template. After you create a document based on the template, remove the page break from the document.

"Great", I thought, "That's exactly what I need".
After adding the page break, I then setting the header and footer to not being the 'Same as Previous', and finally created a document based on the template. Unfortunately, if I then delete the page break in the document the header and footer for the first page is removed.

Anyone know of a way that works?

Don't worry. The minute you put a page break back in, it's okay. Did you test it?

Yes, you can have a template that has different stuff in subsequent page headers without showing those pages in the template. When the template user inserts the page break or whatever, the appropriate stuff will happen. Will this work with multiple section breaks -- No. I always created my template with the required breaks. On each page, I'd put in red, hidden text, some instructions for the user of the template. You could also include a macro in the template that'll delete all of the hidden text when desired.

These guys have some terrific information on templates, headers and footers, and section breaks:
And I'm certainly willing to answer more questions/help further.

Thanks Db, but I have discovered that the Help file in Word is almost-correct in it answer, but not quite.

What it fails to mention is that you have to select the Page Setup button in the Headers & Footers toolbar and make sure that the 'Different First Page' checkbox is checked in the 'Layout' tab, before you create the header and/or footer otherwise it completely ignores anything you set up!

Plus, you don't actually have to have a second blank page left over in the template for it to work. Good, it saves trying to get users to understand that they have to delete that last page before printing.
