In saving a document I wrote in Word 2003 it somehow went to a read only designation. I wanted to copy it and paste and it would not allow me to do so. I checked my settings in Word an the box for read only was unchecked. How do I remove this "read only " status so I can copy and paste tne document in a letter I want to send not as an attachment.

I have never had problems copying things from a Read only file. Perhaps I have been lucky. Check the the location where you save your file. There may an undeleted temp file that's causing the doc to open read only.

If that doesn't work, disable your anti-virus software temporarily and see if doc opens.

Still, if no joy, look for bad sectors using Scandisk (Error Checking): right click on your drive, Properties, Tools....

Also, just try doing File (or Office button) - Save As... Save the file, so you don't lose your changes (well I guess it's too late for that by now). You can always go back and delete the old one, and rename the new one to the old name.

dgforeman,

Did you get it fixed? What solution if any did you find?

Is this a Word problem or a Windows problem? Are you trying to copy and paste the document as a whole?

If so, try right-clicking and changing the protections.

Also if you can open the document, you can still use 'Save As' to place a copy somewhere else.
