Word "plugin" Print unavailable FTP

Sorry for the cryptic subject title, but I was trying to get as much information into it as possible.

Here's the problem:
A faculty member here at the University has Word files stored on an FTP site that he links to via his home page.

When he visits the FTP site and double clicks one of the Word files it opens in a new Browser window, with the Word "plugin" as I call it (the rulers show up, menu items change, etc.) Up to this point everything is working normal.

The problem is that the print option from the File menu is unavailable (disabled). If he saves the document to his desktop and opens it in Word, he can print fine. Some of his students have this same problem, but of course I can't duplicate it on my machine.
