I posted this in the MS Office forum as well.

A client has sent some word documents to me that have charts that I cannot view using word 98 - everything else pretty much shows up. When I double-click on the picture and get the window showing the picture from document, it's super tiny. I tried making PDFs to see if there's was something there, but nothing appeared.

However, I could click and copy the pic and then pasted into Illustrator and scale up about 1000% and see what the authors had used.

Now, when I forwarded the document to a coworked using a PC, they could see the charts just fine.

Is it my older version? I guess a workaround will be opening them on the PC, but I'd like to know what to look for should I come across this again. I'll have to do a bunch of conversions to several documents when I'm finished to get this print-ready.

All help/ideas appreciated.

Thanks,
Donna

I suspect ol' OLE is at play here.

You're working on a pretty old version and, i'm guessing a fairly old Mac OS.

If the machine is fairly old, you might try opening the Word doc in Clarisworks/Appleworks, whcih most likely came on your machine. If that works, Save As Word and see it you can now open it in Word 98.

You can also see if you have a program called MacLink Plus, which came bundeld on many macs. If so, try using that to translate the newer word doc.

Sometimes, when word has stuff embedded, it helps to use Page Layot view rather than normal. Don't know why but I have to use that often on received pc docs. Also tables are somtimes botched with things like Autofit in the Table menu. You might try duplicting the doc (to preserve the original) open up the tiny table and go through the Table menu to see what;s been done to that table.

Thanks, jimoblak and jmgalvin. You're right about using the old Mac (9.2.2), I'll probably have to send it to my home machine to see about the workarounds.

Thanks again,
Donna
