Word opening multiple instances of Access when mail merging 1

I have a form in my Access database that allows a user to customize the criteria for a mail merge. When Access opens the mailmerge document, another instance of Access is opened. This is causing a problem because the criteria is based on form data and when the new instance opens, the form data isn't there. Can anyone help me? Is there a setting in Word that says "just access the data, don't open access"? Or is there a way to check and see if another instance is already running and close the current one? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!!!

Thank you so much!!!!! I couldn't figure out why it was doing this all of a sudden, but it turns out I had added a name for the project and that threw everything of. You are the best!!!!!!!!!
