I am running Win Xp sp2 and office xp.
I have a dell inspiron laptop. Word has been working fine.
I had no crashes, did not install any programs or have virus problems.
all of a sudden if I launch Word, it will give me the send error message, the will give me the option to start in safe mode which is the only way it will launch.
I have uninstalled office and removed all items from the registery but still on a reinstall I am having the same problem.
The only info I can copy is
AppName: winword.exe AppVer: 10.0.2627.0 ModName: winword.exe
ModVer: 10.0.2627.0 Offset: 008248f2

I any ideas?

yes
same results with a new doc.
I created a new one. Saved it with a new location and name.
Then tried opening it and same results. Will have to launch in safe mode. No doc will open with it. then can open the file.
Thanks
Pamela

Not a new doc, a new normal.dot. You do not create normal.dot. You remove the existing one, then start Word again. Word creates normal.dot - you don't.

Try removing all copies of normal.dot. There may be more than one.

I had tried a file which I created on a different computer over two years ago which I had burned to a cd.
I had a co worker in a different city create two different ones. I took one off the server and also had her email the other.
Happened with both.
Is there any pref files for word?
could a .dll file in windows becausing this?
Any other suggestions?

Here it is step by step:

Go to Start
Search
click all files and folders
type in: normal.dot
click search
When the file comes up, click it, press delete, and restart your computer.

Thanks,
I just did a search this time for normal and found the file. I had tried earlier today with your first email on the normal.dot and did not find any.
I am going to remove the file and restart my computer.
I assume this is a preference file type?
I used to do tech support for adobe and this is what we would have people to do when problems showed up in adobe's programs like this did for me in word.
Thanks
Pamela

Normal.dot is a template file word uses for opening a blank document. When you open word after deleting the file a Normal.dot will automatically be recreated with the default settings.

I have the same issue with Word and I can't find the file normal.doc or normal.dot (which is it?)

It is normal.dot

This file is essential to Word. Word will NOT run without it. Therefore, if you delete it, Word automatically creates a new one, with all settings configured for its own defaults.

Even Microsoft states that normal.dot gets corrupted easily. The reason being is there are constant read and write operations to it. Every operation has the potential for errors, and so, with many many of them, it gets corrupted. Deletion of normal.dot is a common first level troubleshooting technique.

Depending on how the install was done, and depending on if your network "pushes" a normal.dot to users, normal.dot can reside in a couple of locations.

This is why it is best to do a full drive search for it. There can be multiples. Find them all, and delete them (or rename them - see below). Do this when Word is NOT started. Then start Word. It will make a new, default set, normal.dot.

There may be other things going on that is causing problems, but deleting (or renaming) normal.dot is a first step.

Rename vs Delete

Normal.dot contains (usually) all user input Autotext entries, and macros. If you have many of these, and you do not want to lose them, rename normal.dot. User AutoText in the renamed file can later be copied back into the new normal.dot.

Once you try delete/rename normal.dot, if problems persist, then next thing is to look for global templates, or COM Addins, that are cauing problems.

win2k(sp4), officexp (sp3), dell latitude 600.

i had what sounds like a very similar prob. crashed every time i opened the app - lasted for perhaps 10 secs. it also ran in safe mode...only.

repaired office suite from another app (excel) several times - no good
uninstalled and reinstalled suite - no good
removed normal.dot - no good
ran all malware and virus check programs - no good

then a brainwave hit (and don't ask why or where this came from):
Code:
start|programs|accessories|system tools|system info|office 10 applications|office event/application fault
- and the problem was staring me in the face: [module...hpzntp07.dll] is a file for my hp printer was the only fault. i remember that a similar problem occurrs when you have a file that you create with the printer connected to your laptop, but go away and don't set the printer offline - the app will crash, but there is no missing or corrupt files.

i uninstalled my printer software and reinstalled and all is now right with the world.

per ardua ad astra

Thanks to all whom helped....
After removing the normal.dot file it now works fine.
If you ever need adobe support just email me. I used to to tec support and did level two support before they left the Charlotte area for Or. which I didn't want to move to.
thanks again
Pamela

Sorry for the confusion I caused saying .doc. Was not paying enough attention I think. [hammer]
