When I create a Word document everything seems fine... As soon as I save the document in a network location I get a horrible lag when typing. Now I know that by default this sounds like a network issue but Word is the only application doing this!! Once the file is saved on the network, the word process takes up 100% processor when typing. After 5 seconds or so the words appear on the screen. Any suggestions?

I tried reinstalling Office. Thnaks in advance

Word creates and uses temporary files in the same folder as the document. If your machine is under resourced or your network slow then you may see performance effects in Word in ways which differ from other applications. Try making a local copy of the file, if you can, to work on if you are experiencing problems.

Enjoy,
Tony

Hi Tony, I did try to make a local copy of the file and eveything is fine. This does not seem to be the fault of the network though... Other office applications are behaving fine in a network environement. Keep in mind that office is installed locally. Could there be anything else causing the issue? Thanks a lot for the help

If you have a more recent version of Office, one of the options under Tools, Options, Save tab is to <make local copy of files stored on a network or removable drives>.

Does that help?

Hi, I have word 2000... I don`t think this option is available. Is there anything else I could try? I know that making a local copy of the file works but this isn`t a solution. It`s as if word is having a hard time with the network. I did more tests on the switch itself and everything is fine on the networking side. Any sugestions? Thanks

This cannot be so. If the network connection is working correctly, there wouldn't be a problem when working on a network stored file. Is anyone else having the same problem working on Word files?

Either your network connection is bad or your network profile is corrupt.

If you are the only user with this problem, then you need to eliminate the network by plugging your PC into a different network outlet and testing again. If this is still bad, try using someone else's workstation and logging in as yourself. Are you able to work OK now? If it is still bad, then it would point to your network profile.

Thanks for the info. I got amy network collegue to sniff the port while the user was typing and getting the lag. Their seems to be an issue with the smb protocol. It seems to be going arround in circles thus causing a lag. This is happening with all office applications. I logged into his machine and the issue persists on my profile... SMB is located in layer 6 of the OSI model so i don't thin the issue is in the NIC or it`s driver. Any suggestions? Thank you

SMB protocol: that bug was sorted out with one of the old ServicePack for Windows 2003 server. Check that Windows Server is patched up to date.

Alright, I verified the Windows Server 2003 - it`s updated to SP1. I don`t think this would be the cause since this is the only machine experiencing problems in over 300. But thanks for the suggestion. Anything else?

I can send you the log from the sniffer program if you would like..
