When the user just opens MS Word in Metaframe, the message "The drive or network connection that the shortcut 'Group Programme - Induction.Ink refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available, and then try again'

where does word actually check this info from. the normal.dot is regenerated on each login and i can open that no problem.
any thoughts - i cannot find the file at all and user doesnt recognise it either

Hello,

I think you should check the registry at first, then try to regenerate normal dot for all users.

Afterthat, you might change the profiles for all users.

cheers
Balage

it only effects this one user
all other users are fine

they are using volatile profiles
ie they get deleted and cleaned up each time they logoff

what do you look for in registry
i can open her normal.dot ok - it doesnt look as if it comes from there

I see, if its happens only for a user, then you should try to re-create a new profile for this user. Usually this solves these kind of problems.

cheers

profiles are created each login using the exact same default user as all others

profiles are volatile

i need to know how word actuially works i think

When a Terminal Services user logs in, settings specific to them are loaded up in the registry under "HKEY_USERS". Each user's settings are identified by their Windows SID. For example, something that looks like...

S-1-6-22-978236167-2893745677-5876
S-1-6-22-978236167-2893745677-5876_Classes

These settings are all bundled up in the "ntuser.dat" section of the user's profile. What might be happening in your case is...

When the user logs out, their ntuser.dat isn't unloading or disappearing from the registry as it should. In other words, even though you've cleared down the profile in Windows, the registry is still populated with the flakey user settings.

This may not be the case, but something to look at. I presume you've searched the registry for any instances of "Induction.Ink "?

searched the registry nothing

your explanation is the kinda of thinking i was having except that the user is volatile as well - ie when she logs out she gets deleted - i have checked this part and she is definately deleted and therefore by difinition cannot have any rights anywhere

i think i'm just going to have to try a filemon and reg mon and analyse the million out lines it pumps out

or change the policy for her so she isnt volatile and not restricted to see if i can see where it is with a relaxed desk
