I have Microsoft Office 2000 installed on my computer which runs on Windows XP - when I had Windows ME I didn't experience that many problems, but now that I've switched to XP (with a new computer), Word in particular is giving me SO much grief. It doesn't like anything with tables in it, and takes AGES to do anything (change font, print, etc.). It also seems to have problems opening things from file ... if I double-click an icon it opens Word all right, but then it does nothing for ages. When I check the Task Manager I find out Word is no longer responding.

Does anyone have any ideas about why this is happening? Are there software conflict issues I'm not aware of, or is this version of Word just not good for XP (please don't let it be the latter ... I don't want to have to buy a newer version of the Office Suite!!).

Thanks in advance.

I can't advise on why your present set-up isn't working. But you can get an up-to-date version of Word as a stand-alone product, or as part of a package along with the Encarta, etc. Much cheaper than the entire Office suite, which is really for professional business use.

Hi rgstewart,

You shouldn't have a problem with the Word version. The two things most likely, in my experience, to really slow Word down are network issues and lack of memory. Assuming your new PC has plenty RAM, do you have anything pointing to a non-existent network address?

One other thought, although it shouldn't be necessary, is to try running Word in Win 98 compatibility mode.

Enjoy,
Tony
