Word hangs PC when starting, BUT...

RE: Office 97 Professional Edition. When Word is started from the .exe or a shortcut (Win98 SE) the PC hangs up right after the program is launched. If, however, you click on a .doc file anywhere on the PC, Word opens with the file works fine. The other programs in Office 97 work fine, just Word does this. This problem arose after a bad printer installation, but all that is straightened out and the PC is doing fine except for the mentioned problem. I removed and re-installed Office 97, I made new shortcuts and tried starting it from the .exe in the office folder. I tried making a new normal.dot template. None worked. Any ideas?

You may want to try an uninstaller program. When a program is installed in a computer, it saves files in other directories, like Windows. This may be where the corrupted file is. An uninstaller program hunts for the leftover files and gets rid of them as well, so that you're starting with a clean slate.

Are you a registry editor? Follow these instructions at your own risk, just follow them carefully:

1. Close Word.
2. Hit Start-Run and type in regedit and hit enter.
3. Much like Windows Explorer, browse to this folder:

hkey_current_user/software/microsoft/office/8.0/word

4. Right-click the Word folder and rename it.
5. Close registry editor.
6. Launch Word.

Hope it helps. If not, I suggest a complete uninstall using Eraser 97 (I've got it if you want it) and complete reinstall.
