thread1256-1373011 reminded me of a game I used to play often. I don't think it would translate well on Tek-Tips, but it is quite fun out there in the 'real world' (you remember that, don't you?).

Let's use the space to list any other word games that y'all play in real life.

Game Play:
Someone starts with a letter. The turn passes around the group to the left (as with most board/card games). Each player adds 1 letter on his/her turn.

Goal:
The goal is to NOT be the first person to spell a word - any word. You try to steer towards a word that will end on someone else's turn. If your letter inadvertently results in a word, you are 'out' and play starts over without you.

Players are systematically eliminated until there is only one. (There can, after all, be only one.)

Challenges:
Anyone playing can challenge you after you add a letter - if challenged you have to state what word you were trying to spell. If you were bluffing (or misspelling a word), you are out. If you were not, the challenger is out.

Acceptable Words:
We always played with the usual restrictions - no proper nouns, acronyms or technical jargon. But 'house rules' could easily be adapted by those playing.

Also, just to be as elitist as possible [wink], no dictionary should ever be referred to. This is a "gentleman's game" and if a word is only known by one player, he should be trusted. At the same time, if you are confident that someone is misspelling a word, you should, by all means, challenge them.

It is a fast-paced, challenging game that can be played anywhere with no equipment. We used to play in a bar while drinking - which adds a new level of difficulty. (Yes, I'm a geek.) I'm quite out of practice, but if you play often you'll start to memorize good words. And different words work for different numbers of players.

Examples (assuming two players):
I start with "A".
- I lost. "A" is a word.

You start with "E".
I add "Y".
- I win. You can't think of any word starting with E-Y that doesn't have an E as the next letter. E-Y-E is a word, so you are forced out. You could bluff and play E-Y-T, but if challenged, you'd better have a word that I don't know.

NOTE: I thought I remembered this being discussed before. A little search turned up this link. I include it in case it does a better job of explaining it than I have. (It has been pointed out that the 'create a word and lose' rule isn't part of the original post in the link, but I add it in my post.)
