Here's a baffling problem. I am replacing my *.jpg's in a Word file by deleting it, and linking to its equivalent *.bmp like so: Insert => Object => Create from File, checking "Link to file" and then browsing and opening the *.bmp file. I'm doing this with the intention of decreasing my file size but after only one image my file size went from 44,013 KB to 56,639 KB. I feel like repeating the line in the movie "Planes, Trains, & Automobiles" when Steve Martin and John Candy yell "You're going the wrong way!" Can anyone help turn me around?

TIA,
Carey

From my understand you are in fact going the wrong way...BMPs are conventionally much larger than JPEG in filesizes. 2 primary things affect picture filesizes:

1. Resolution (the higher resolution, the higher quality and thus more information stored regarding the file)
2. The sheer size of the picture/file itself, obviously if you CROP the image, you'll remove part of the picture and thus the image and its information you won't need shrinking the file.
3. Also there is compression, JPEGs are like the MP3 of image files. You get to keep majority of the quality with little loss of data integrity.

Try doing a Save As and watch most file sizes (which has seen massive editing time) shrink. *Remember.......
If you don't use your head,
your going to have to use your feet.

Also, under Tools, Options, Save, disable "Allow Fast Saves"

If file size is a problem I copy the bmp, then use the PasteSpecial>Picture option in Word to insert the bmp as picture. I've managed to compress a Word Manual from 12 Mbs to less than 800k

Cheers
Nikki
