We are installing Office 97 standard on Windows 2000 Pro machines and it works fine with one exception. When users double click a file in Windows Explorer, they get the following error:
'A document with the name <filename.ext> is already open. You cannot open two documents with the same name, even if the documents are in different folders. To open the second document, either close the document that's currently open, or rename one of the documents."

There are no documents open and the application is not open. Anybody seen this and have a suggestion?

Try this (do this for Word and Excel):

Remove the Excel key from Registry

1. Close the Excel program.
2. Click on the Start button and then choose the Run menu.
3. Input regedit in the command line.
4. Locate the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Excel, right click it.
5. From the popup menu, click to choose Delete, this will remove the key.

Register the program again

6. Click Start->Run.
7. Type "excel.exe /unregserver" (without quotations) in the text box and click OK.
8. Type "excel.exe /regserver" (without quotations) in the text box and click OK.
