I'm running Word 2000 on a Windows '98SE operating system with 128mb RAM. I can open one document without any problems but when I try and open another document, the system freezes and when I press ctrl+alt+del I get the message "The system is dangerously low on resources" with the option to shut down the open Word document, when I select "yes" the document closes and nothing else on my computer responds, even when I click the "start" menu, it just appears completely blanked out so I have to re-boot before I can use anything at all. Is there anything I can do to correct this? I've been using Word without any problems in the past and Word 2000 was pre-installed on my computer when I bought it.

Thanks

Jay.

Could be a damaged normal.dot file.
Do a FIND for normal.dot
When found, rename it to normal.old
Restart and then try to recreate the issue in Word
Any change?

Thanks, I did what you suggested and it works, I'm no longer getting the error but do you know what could have caused it in the first place ?

IMHO, mostly just daily "wear and tear, any time a setting/default gets changed, normal.dot must adjust. The more tweaks the user makes to the master template, the more likely corruption can occur.
