Word Documents won't Download?

Something happened, and I can't open Word documents in IE anymore. When we try to open a Word document in a webpage, it appears to try to open, but IE gets a blank window with a Red X in the upper left hand corner. I can usually right click the document in the webpage and save it to disk, but Word documents won't open. This has been going on for a month on all the websites I've tried. I've tried all the settings I can find in IE, still no change.

In addition, in IE do a Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, scroll down to the Security subsection and checkmark the first two entries.
