I have copied many hundreds of documents from an old system running NT4 SP-5 with Office 97 onto a machine running XP Pro SP-1 with Word 2002 SP-2 from Office XP. A significant number of the documents take up to 30 seconds to open on the new machine. Many of perform them correctly.
I have also tried copying them onto the server which is running W2000 SP-3 and accessing them from there and the results are the same as when I access them locally.
I have performed numerous comparative tests between fast and slow documents looking for a common feature and I believe I have eliminated the author, the fonts, the printer, the template, the file location and the physical PC.
If I copy the slow document then the copy is slow whether I create the copy by using "Save as" or using Explorer. If I create a new document using the same template and cut and paste the contents of the original into the new then the new one will be fast.
Has any one any ideas on what I should try next?

The problem is solved!! I turned off opportunistic logging as recommended in this thread thread68-434924
