A user has a Word document that when saved is 5000kB in size, although actually it is very simple and when pasted in to another word document, the new document is only 197kB.
also, when the user altered the 5000kB file this morning it jumped to 10000kB when saved. The file in question contains a few Power Point files, but these are only 12kB each.
Any ideas why the original is so large?

User did experience error:
'Can not save DOC that is already open', yesterday, but this is probably a coincidence.

Thanks

Guy:

Items that cause file bloating.

#1. Go to Tools-Options-Save tab. Are they saving their files down to a lesser version?

#2. Definitely copy to a new doc to get rid of corruption, which can also cause file bloating.

#3. Cut graphics, hit Edit-Paste special-As a Picture (not enhanced, just picture), which rids Word of the necessity of keeping the information about the graphic and just converts it to an Office picture. (Which could also be the case with the PowerPoint stuff.

#4. "A few PowerPoint files"? Were these saved as pictures, then inserted? Or how were they inserted? Are they linked/embedded?

#5. File-Properties, is the "save preview picture" checkbox checked? Uncheck it.

Hmmm. I think that about covers it.

Good luck. Brainbench MVP for Microsoft Word
