Bizarre one this as it was working until last week.

If I send a Word doc from a Mac to a Mac running 10.3 or 10.4 with Entourage 2004 (latest build or last months build) all is well.

Send the same file from a PC and it will not open the doc. Set all .doc files to open with Word and tick the box and it doesn't fix the problem.

What am I missing?

make sure that you're appending the ".doc" extension. When you get the Save window, there's a checkbox at the bottom for this. Make sure that always checked for all saves on all apps.

Hmm. Gee, why didn't I think of that?

And returning to a lack of sarcasm....

All files have .doc at the end of them. We've set all .doc files to open in Word 2004 and ticked the box to say always use this app. Any Macs with Open Office installed will open the doc in Open Office. Otherwise they open it in TextEdit.

This is for Word docs made on a PC. Its almost like the resource fork is being removed but it isn't that.

Sorry. I misread - thought you were sending TO pc rather than receiving.

This one's a stumper sicne we also use entourage and receive Word docs from pcs, and they open in Word. We use OSX 10.3X

Are you saving the doc first or opening it from the attachment window? Try saving. Then right click on the thing for the contextual menu and go to Open With. If the settings on the machine are holding, the first app should say Word - with "default" next to it. If you are saving first, you could also try opening from teh attachment widow, just to see what it opens in.

You could also save one of the probem attachments and then go to Get Info and see what's listed. If it's not Word, you could try changing to Word and hit the open all checkbox again and see if it then holds.

Forgot something. It's possible that your finder prefs are damaged. You can go to user/library/preferences/com.apple.finder.plist and trash that. Then reset prefs - open with - and see if that helps.

Ah. Resolved it. We tried trashing the plist which didn't help but I was browsing this forum and noticed something I'd never tried...

We've been Ctrl Click, Open With, tick the box. You responded elsewhere to do it with Get Info which gives the option to change all files to that. It cured it first time for all formats on all Macs. So have a star on me. :)

Oh. I thought you had done the open with thing in get info already.

Have a look at Ctrl click Open With and its slightly different to the Get Info version. Get Info offers another option to basically reapply to all files.
