Problem Description: Word closes with the following message: Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close.

I recently upgraded to Office XP Professional. All applications with the exception of Word work flawlessly. Word crashes within a few seconds whenver it is opened. I reinstalled multiple times following directions I found in Microsoft's knowledge base and got the same result. I have tried the installation using the command line
Code:
change user /install
prior to using the control panel ADD NEW Software and
Code:
change user /execute
after installation. Using the install mode commands or not makes no difference.

I decided to try Office 2000 Professional and use the transform file that is available with the Office 2000 Resource kit. The only difference in the result is that Word now causes a Doctor Watson instead of the message above. I am running Windows NT 4.0 build 1381 with Service Pack 6 and Windows Terminal Server build 419.

I am relatively new to Citrix and I inherited this installation and problem. Office 97 had the same issue and my predecessor was unable to fix the problem. I have contacted Microsoft vial email/online support and they have directed me to the same knowledge base articles I have already viewed and used.

Anyone seen this problem before.

These two messages appear in the event log:

You didn't give us the event ID number or source but you could try to search this site for the event ID that appears in the messages in the event log. Maybe that could give you a clue to what the problem is. You could also try to use the utilities Filemon and Regmon from to se if there are any problems with files or registry entries missing or not having the correct permissions.
Hope this helps

Hi again
I also found this info in Google Groups. Someone had a similar problem and found a solution. This is a direct copy of the message that i found:

"Hi all,

I’ve seen that I was not the only one having problems with Office 2000
writing 1004 events to the Eventlog. In my case this happened each time
a user started an Office application. The event message has the
following text:

Detection of product '{00010413-78E1-11D2-B60F-
006097C998E7}', feature 'xxxUserData', component
'{8ADD2C96-C8B7-11D1-9C67-0000F81F1B38}' failed.

(where xxxUserData can be ‘ExcelUserData’,
‘WordUserData’ or any other Office application-UserData)

My site uses Windows NT Terminal Server and I wrote a tool to preset
the Office user info equal to the domain registration info. I’m not
sure if this is part of the problem, but it seems fair to mention it...

Some new users had this problem, and did not have an application-
specific UserData=1 dword-key. Creating these values by hand solved my
problem. The values should be at:

HKEY_USERS\<User-SID>\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Access\UserData=1
HKEY_USERS\<User-SID>\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Excel\UserData=1
HKEY_USERS\<User-SID>\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0
\PowerPoint\UserData=1
HKEY_USERS\<User-SID>\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Word\UserData=1

An additional (common) value should be at:
HKEY_USERS\<User-SID>\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Common\UserData=1"

Hope this helps
