We have been having a recurring problem on many machines here with Office 2000. They get the error Word cannot save due to a file permission error. Sometimes they'll get a message that says autorecovery or autobackup, something like that, was postponed due to a file permission error. They get this error on their harddrive, the network drive, doesn't seem to matter. Each user has full permission to their harddrive (Win2k) and to the network drive (Win2K Server) as well. We are also running Inoculan 4.53, Novell Client (for some stupid reason, nothing is on them). Both server and workstation are set to monitor for virus activity on incoming files only. If they rename the file and save it to the same place, they can save. It also does not delete the ~*.tmp file, creating a huge mess on the server. Bill Zielinski

Let me be a little more specific:

The Always Create Backup Copy option is turned on, with a server or operating system that does not support long file names. Turn off the Always Create Backup Copy option by doing the following:

1. On the Tools menu, click Options.

2. Click the Save tab.

3. Click to clear the Always Create Backup Copy option.

NOTE: This option copies the previous version of the document as a backup copy with the name "Backup of filename". As a result, Word cannot create a backup copy on server or operating systems that only support 8.3 file names (file names with eight characters and a three-letter extension).

This is why when you try and save the file as another name, it works!

Of course I am not able (yet, I'm trying though) to create this problem for myself, but I don't think any of these apply, as they are not saving to a Novell server anymore, Always Create Backup Copy is off, and the features for Inoculan 4.53 are set they way they describe. They are saving to a Win2k server directory. Also some of these documents (maybe all, but I don't think so) are converted files from WordPerfect v8. I wish we didn't have such a mixmatch way of doing things here, but that's government for you. Bill Zielinski
