Word cannot open files with space in name

I have a problem with MS Word from Office 97 SP1. It doesn't like having files with spaces in the filename. Let's say the filename is "this is the doc.doc". When you double click on the file, it says Word cannot open the file "this.doc". You can click on the OK button, and it goes onto say word cannot open the file "is.doc". And so on. After it gets through the whole thing, it finally opens the document with no problem.

Is there a fix for this? Our coporate standard is SP1, so I can't apply SP2.

Thanks
Paul

That's a strange one. While waiting for the proper Office 97 answer you might try renaming the DOCs without the spaces, eg. "this is the doc.doc" becomes "thisdoc1.doc".

Hmmm... I think I see a problem with the " doc.doc" part. Do you see it too?

The file open routine should parse tha name backward from the final "doc" so even "doc.doc" theoretically shouodn't be a problem.

Browsing to a file should eliminate any of these kinds of problems.

Are you double-clicking the file in Explorer or in Word's File,Open dialog? Whichever one you're doing, try the other.

Also, just for the hell of it, In Word, try browsing to the folder containing the file then typing in the file name enclosed in double quotes. (Just a test to see what an alternate method of feeding it the name does.)
Jeff
masterracker@hotmail.com

It only seems to happen through Explorer. I can open the document fine from Word. I should also mention that I just tried opening the same document from the Start Documents folder and had the same problem. It doesn't seem to matter if the document is local or on the network either.

Maybe it is an explorer issue. MS Tech Net says there are problems 'saving' a document with spaces in the name. the solution for that is to apply SP2.
If it's happening through Explorer I would guess it's an OS issue. What OS are you using? If it's NT I would suggest SP4 at the very least.
Jeff
masterracker@hotmail.com

I've had that happen on NT and W95.
Here's the fix. I've used it successfully several times.

Place "%1" (without the quotation marks) on the end of the command line for the association with the specific document type. Follow these steps:

From My Computer, View, Options, select the File Types tab.

In the Registered File Types box, select edit for the file type.(Word Document)In the Actions box, click Open, then Edit. In the Application Used To Perform Action box, add a space, and then add
"%1" (without the quotation marks) to the end of the line.

Click ok then close.
I goofed. The "%1" should be WITH the quotation marks!!
Carol's fix should work in Word. The same fix works for Excel files, but for Excel, first try going to Tools-Options-General tab and make sure that "ignore other applications" is NOT checked.
I post this for people that might be "listening in." Good luck, Paul!

I am having a similar problem with word. When I try to open it using file, open I get the cannot open file problem as mentioned above. If I run it from explorer it will open the file but I cannot save it.

I haven't experienced this with excel or access files so the problem seems to be purely word located.

I have checked for the "%1" and found it in the DDE message shown below. Is this DDE Setting OK?

I am using Windows 95 on with Novell Netware.

Try re-registering Words Registry settings. From the run line, type "winword.exe /regserver" This will clear it up. Good Luck

..PS..Thats without the quotes
