Last year this question cropped up, and I chipped in looking for a solution - after a client started installing XP SP2 on his machines and rendering my application unusable.

Without XP SP2 the app would open a Word document, do some find and replaces and bingo all in about 10 secs (worst case).

With XP SP2, the process would slow to maybe 10 minutes or more - although it would finish eventually.

I have another client who is buying new machines now, he has had ones with XP SP1 and is buying machines with XP SP2 preinstalled and (I don't think) easily removed.

These new machines are exhibiting the 'go slow' problem.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

TIA

I don't think you would be very happy if you did either.
It's probably not the OS. It's probably an anti-virus thing. You may need to tweak your AV settings for scripting and file I/O.

Hi Dave

I had (as I said) the same problem late last year, the client's IT dept had installed SP2 on all the machines on one site - and one or two of them didn't like running my app afterwards, the OLE controlling Word just went really, really, get a coffee and go out for lunch, slow.

I tried all the AV stuff then, removed it in fact, and the firewalls and the security agents, no help at all - just had to uninstall SP2 and then they ran like a dream again. That time I spoke to their IT director and explained and he was fine about it.

This client would be happy too - but I can't remove it from a 'burnt in' version of XP (can I?).

I could have a look at this machine and see if they've done anything else to it...

Thanks for your thoughts

Update,

I'm on-site and the SP2 is 'burnt in' and can't be removed using the control panel.

I've removed the antivirus and the firewall - all to no effect.

Searching on Google, I can see I'm not the only one with a problem like this - but I can't see a solution.

Any ideas anyone?
