Word Application Closes When Closing Document

I am having trouble with MS Word 2003. When closing a document using the inner X or file close, the whole application closes. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Check to see if you have any add-ins under Tools, Templates and add-ins

or

Try renaming Normal.dot and see if that fixes the problem.
