My partner is using Word 2000 for a large document of around 800K. She saves the original to an empty 1.44 floppy (she uses it for portability between work and home). Then she makes some changes to the original on her work PC and attempts to save the changed file (but with the same filename) to the same floppy. Word tells her there's not enough space. Backup is set to off in Options. Can someone explain what is happening here? Is there a way to make Word overwrite a file with a modified version of the same name and approximately the same size.

It's driving her (and me!) bananas.

Thanks,

Roy

Sure.

Virtually all files these days are opened as a second, temporary file on the same location. Now you've really got two files working off of A drive.

Have her use Windows explorer to drag the file to her desktop, work on it. When she's done and has saved it, have her right-click the filename on the desktop, and hit Send to-Floppy A. She'll have to delete the original first.

Also: I hope this is not the only copy she keeps of this file...floppies are notorious for going bad at the wrong time.

When replacing a File Word will always make a copy then delete the original. When saving to a Floppy this means that any file of greater than 700K will create this problem.
You'll have to save to your hard drive and then copy to the floppy. Sandy

Thank you both for clearing up that issue.

Regards,
Roy
