Word 97 SR2 eating up resources

I am trying to figure out why from time to time Word will consume all my resources. I have looked in task manager and can see WORD.EXE is eating up cpu time 100%, I become aware of this as the fan on my laptop starts whirring. The only way to stop it is to close the document I am working on and thenn reopen. Leaving the Word application open is fine. I then went into Macros and see that there are macros which were apparently created by me today (have never created a macro) but when I highlight them and then try to delete them the delete option is grayed out. Could the macros be the culprit, what could be causing Word to eat up all my available cpu resources? I even killed the findfast processes but to no avail.

Certain addins are run my macros then are installed when you load your program

First have done a virus , spyware scan

Do you open and close your word program frequently
sometimes the previous memory allocated is still appears used.
