Here i am again in IE hell. Does anybody know how to disable or remove a specific plugin (e.g. Word 97 plugin) in IE6?

thanks,
Nick

Not sure if this is the right place, but worth a try. In IE select Tools > Internet options. First page, you see half way down "tempory internet files". The right most button is labeled "settings". On this screen select the butotn bottom right "view objects". This shows the downloaded plugins. See if your plugin is in here and delete it. Not sur eif this will work, but any port in a storm.

If you think you're in IE hell, why don't you switch to Mozilla or Opera? Just reading the headings of the posts in this forum should give you a clue that IE is going to be "hell". And if you do think that's enough, take a look at the Email forum - nothing but Outlook Express problems. Mozilla based browsers/email clients DO NOT have these problems.

There's always a better way. The fun is trying to find it!

Believe me, I hear you. Personally, I do use FireBird (and love it. It offers so much more than IE could hope to). This problem is affecting somebody else in our organization tho. Whenever she opens a link to a doc from an email msg, like file://C:\document.doc, it will open in IE instead of Word like it is supposed to and every other computer does. She has issues in other programs also, so I'm looking at IE as the culprit. Thanks to everyone who has responded.

that sounds more like file associations. If you / they double click on a word file outside of an e-mail (i.e. one you have stored on your computer), does it still want to open IE? or does it open Word?

no, it will open in Word. It is only hyperlinks that use the file:// protocol that are causing problems.
