My boss came to me because he lost his autotext settings in word. I have serached through a number of files (*.dot) to try and find out where it could be. But I did not find it. Is there an easy way to find out what could have happened to it?

Well, they're stored in templates in Word 97, so I think you've done your job. Unfortunely, renaming the normal.dot file is a really common fix for Word. Try looking around for normal.old or normal.bak or normal.bad or something like that to see if someone had him rename it. I personally use abnormal.dot when renaming normal.dot.

You might try calling up Tools/Macro/Macros/Organizer and click the Autotext tab. This should show you the location of most autotext entries, but some could be attached to templates not contained in normal.dot, having been copied and the original entry lost or moved.

I found the templates that he uses. There are stored in about 35 *.dot files. I am trying to get word to recognize these files, but it doesn't seem to want to.

My question is how to I get the contents of the templates into the autotext feature?

Troy:

Open his normal.dot file directly by changing the files of type to templates and finding his normal.dot.

Then, go to Format-Styles and hit the ORGANIZER button (this is just one way to get there).

On whichever side DOESN'T have normal.dot, hit CLOSE, then the close button changes to OPEN, hit it, and open one of those templates. Make sure you're on the AUTOTEXT tab. You'll see any/all autotext entries in both templates. Just copy over.
