This problem is an intermittent one which affects a few of our users. Word is loaded as part of the Office 95 suite. The user can launch Word correctly, but when she attempts to open a document using the File¦Open command or the Open icon on the toolbar, Word crashes with the message "An unexpected error occurred: I/O error 6". The PC's a PIII running Windows 95 on an NT4 network. It also has MS Exchange and a mainframe emulator loaded, and is attached to a networked HP LJ4M - correct drivers loaded. If anyone can help with this I'd be eternally grateful - wouldn't you just know that Microsoft don't bother supporting Office 95 anymore!

This is a registry corruption error. To fix this problem you will have to edit the registry.

1. Quit Word 97 and all other open Windows applications.

2. On the Windows Start menu, click Run.

3. In the Open box, type "RegEdit" (without the
quotation marks), and then click OK.

4. In the registry editor, select the following
registry key:

HKey_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\

5. On the Edit menu, click Delete.

6. On the Registry menu, click Exit.

7. Shut down and restart Windows.

8. Once you have restarted Windows, place your Office 97
or Word 97 CD in the CD-ROM drive.

9. On the Start menu, click Run.

10. In the Open box, type the following line, and click OK.

D:\Setup.exe /y

11. Click Reinstall, and allow setup to complete.
Setup will not copy any files to the system.
Running setup with the /y switch only updates
the Windows registry settings.
