I have a document in which I have created a style Heading 1 (including the space character). I would like to delete that style, removing it from the Styles pane which comes up when I click on the little downward pointing arrow at the bottom RH corner of the Styles box on the ribbon.

There is no text with that style any more (I have created a new style, Heading2).

However, when I click on the downward pointing arrow for that style in the Styles pane, the "Delete Heading 1" line is greyed out,

To try to resolve this problem I have copied the document to a new document Temp1, and deleted all the text; the only character in the file appears to be a Paragraph marker whose style is Normal, But I still cannot delete style Heading 1; the only styles on the pane are "Clear all (OK, not a style), "Heading 1" and "Normal".

Grateful for help from anyone who knows how to remove unwanted styles from the styles pane.

Thanks. Andrew M.

You cannot delete Word's built-in Styles. Neither can you remove them from the Styles pane - you can exercise some control over which ones display there, though, by clicking on 'Options' and changing the 'Select Styles to show' setting.

Thank you for your reply, Paul. I realise I had confused the style that I had created, Heading2, with the style that I had not created, but formatted to my own requirements, Heading 1

Going into the Styles pane, clicking on the Manage Styles icon, going into the Recommended tab, locating Heading 1 and clicking on Hide seems to have done the trick.

Might I ask a further question?

I have created a style List1, and there is a fair amount of text in that style. Occasionally I have a word which is bold, and I see that now a style List1 + Underline appears in the styles pane.

I would prefer that this sub-style did not appear in the Styles pane - it rather clutters it, and I would prefer that the Styles pane only showed the principal styles that I am using - not all the options separately. Can I do that?

I see also that I have a style "Default Paragraph Font" on the styles pane. If I click on "Select all 4 instances", all of the text in the document is selected, even though such text has its own format, Normal or List 1 and so on. How can I remove "Default Paragraph Font" from the Styles Pane.

Thanks again.

I'd have expected to see List1 + Bold. If you apply the Strong character Style to the text, the 'sub-style' entry should disappear.

AFAIK the "Default Paragraph Font" cannot be removed from the Styles Pane. You can, however, change its priority to a lower level, which may meet your needs. You do that via Manage Styles|Recommend>Move Down.

The List1 + Underline (or List1 + Bold) is showing because you have at least one of the options to "show formatting as styles" set - Font formatting in this case. Click on "Options..." at the bottom of the Styles Pane to get the dialog to change this.

"Default Paragraph Font" behaves like any style - and can be hidden. By default it is "Hidden Until Used" but it can be changed to "Always Hidden" on the "Recommend" tab of the "Manage Styles" dialog.

Enjoy,
Tony
