I have an install of Office 2007 and recently when the user attempts to open any WORD document, the application opens but not the document. I can however go to the File, Open menu and manually open the document.

Additionally, the WORD OPTIONS are unavailable. The only Option/Tab that it will allow me to click on is the first one - POPULAR.

Anyone seen this before?

System is XP and I have tried Repairing and also removing WORD.

Any help will be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks,

Patty

Simple, you're opening it in uncooperative mode.

Okay, okay.... [wink]

Actually, I had to help someone with something really similar not too long ago. I ended up finding a help page on the topic on MS Office online which detailed ways to fix the issue via the registry. I don't recall off hand what the site was.. if I find it in the next few, I'll post the link.

Here ya go:

and possibly:

And after I fixed it the first time, the same error popped up again a few days later, but it has since stayed fixed.

It may not be the exact same error, but I believe it's something that could cause various issues, and therefore is likely to be the culprit.

[tab]->.... the WORD OPTIONS are unavailable
You need to have a Workbook open to get to some of the options.

As for your main problem - first check to see if any different word extensions (.doc or .docx) will open by double-clicking them.

In Windows Explorer, go to Tools > Folder Options > File Types. Scroll through to find the file extension(s) that are giving you trouble. Single click on the file type and look at the bottom to see what it says in Opens With.

KJV, LOL - uncooperative mode. That made me smile!

Thanks for your help. I discovered it was 'user specific' so I deleted and recreated her profile. All is well now.

Word Options are available on the main menu, click the big ball up in the upper left corner, at the bottom you should see the link for Word Options. You don't need a doc open to access it.

Gerry & KJV: [blush] You mean Word <> Excel???

Servamatic: Yes, of course you can get to the Options dialog. But my point was that some options are grayed out when you don't have a workbook document open. It's the same in Excel - but that should be expected since, apparently, I think Word and Excel are the same application. [wink]

Interesting, when I open Word ALL options are available. I can click on all the headings and see all the options, hence my previous comment.
In Excel the only items grayed out are very specific items that would only pertain to an individual document.
