Word 2007 Reviewing Pane Takes Long Time Refreshing

I have a document that takes a very long time to display the Reviewing Pane comments.

I click the Review tab and then select Reviewing Pane. Word displays a message at the bottom: Word is refreshing the reviewing pane.

It hangs at this message for a very long time. More than five minutes, until I hit escape. Once I hit escape, it shows me the comments.

Does anyone know what causes this or if there is a fix?
