Word 2007 - Figure numbering

Hi All,

When you insert a caption, and you want the Figure number to be labeled "Chapter number.Figure number" automatically (I.e. Figure 4.2), you need to have your Chapter title (Heading 1 style) as a numbered list so it knows which chapter you are in. I was wondering if there is a work-around for this so I do no have to number my chapter title and still have it automatically numbered as "Chapter number.Figure number).

Can you make each chapter a SECTION? Then use Section Number.

Alrighty! Now that I have entered a Field, what is my next step?

By the way, there are sections before chapter titles start (ie. Table of contents) - will this mess things up?

Insert a formula to subtract the number of sections you have before chapter 1.

Hey, this is not difficult!

Same process to insert a Field, but select ALL as a Category and =(Formula) is the FIRST selection in Field Names. Then click the FORMULA... button and enter

=0-1
[/tt]
and hit OK, only instead of 1, enter the number of sections before Chapter 1

Then SELECT the line, right-click and select Toggle Field Codes. You'll see something like this...

{ =0-1 }
[/tt]
Select the ZERO in the formula, and then redo the first steps I gave you to insert the Section Number.

So now once that is done, how do I go about applying this to my Figure caption numbering?
