Word 2007 Citation Style Grayed Out

Working in Word 2007 with documents created with 2007 to include brand new documents. I am unable to insert citations because the citation style drop-down is grayed out. The gray drop-down displays "Unknown" in one document, and displays "Missing" when I make a new doc.

I am sure a complete install of Word was done. I don't think I have any programs that would interfere. I have never had EndNote installed.

Anyone have any suggestions as to how I might lose the gray and create a bibliography?
