Word 2007 add-in performance horrible

Hi friends,

I really do need help on this one:
I am working in the translation business, and some translators work with CAT Word-Add-Ins rather than with the very high-priced CAT applications.
Until recently, this has not been too much of a problem, but since Word 2007 it has become a real issue:
The performance of these add-ins in Word is ridiculously bad!
I have tested it myself: if I translate using the add-in in Word XP, the segments close/open next in a fraction of a second, a second max.
Using the very same add-in in 2007, it takes ~ 5 seconds or more for the exact same procedure!

Do you have any clue why that is so, and perhaps even how to deactivate one or the other performance-brake in Word 2007?

Supplement: No other COM Add-In is activated in Word.

Thanks a lot!
Andy

I do know there are some performance issues setting some options in Word 2007. Without knowing what Addin(s) you are using and what it may be doing or how it may be tailorable its hard to say more.

Enjoy,
Tony

Hi Tony,

I only use ONE Add-in, it is called "MetaTexis" and it is a translator's tool.
I.e. it queries a database on execution and also writes data back to it. It duplicates sentences and formats them with a frame and shading. On segment closure, the original sentence will be formatted hidden and beginning, source/target separation and end are enclosed in symbols.

From this:
org_doc.gif

it will create this:
seg_open.jpg

and finally this:
seg_closed.gif

Each step, opening a segment (=duplicating, framing, shading), as well as closing it (=de-framing, formatting) will take several seconds in word 2007.

Besides said MetaTexis, I have no Add-ins loaded. MT consists of a Word Add-in (DOT) and a COM Add-In (DLL).

I have made these screenshots in Word XP, as the waiting and sand clock of 2007 drives me nuts...
:)

Does this help narrowing the issue?

Thanks a lot!
Andy

Hi MakeItSo,

Have you checked with MetaTexis for an update/solution? You can email them at: support@metatexis.com

Cheers

Hi Macropod,

I have already had detailed correspondence with the developer of MT. He is aware of the performance issue with Word 2007.
He is not working on an update however, he is trying to compile a Word-independent version for it.
THAT however can take quite a while...
Besides that, I do a lot of Word programming, and the issue also affects MY tools.
Hence I considered it worth the effort to try and find a solution.

Besides that: THIS is the perfect place if ever anyone has found a solution!
;-)

I just installed metatexis and the difference between the two word versions is quite dramatic, isn't it? Unfortunately I can't see what it is doing - the VBA code just calls routines in the dll.

It has all the symptoms of what happens when you set a lot of Word options which is equally painfully slow in 2007. If this is the case, I'm not sure there is much anybody can do; it needs a fix from Microsoft, and I have not heard anything about there being one in the wind so it may be some time.

As far as your own code goes, again there probably isn't much you can do but you should, at least, be able to identify where it is slow. Not much help, I know!

Enjoy,
Tony

Hi Tony,

sorry for replying, it's been quite a hectic weekend...
What you are saying is what I feared.

Neither deactivating automatic spell checking nor switch ing from layout to normal view resulted in any significant speed-up.
One thing I have meanwhile found out: the bigger the doc, the slower the Add-In, whatever that wants to tell me...
