When I first start Word I get 'Run time error 9', how do I get rid of this ?

It seems that this error is most often caused by a faulty or non-compatible Add-in. Disable your add-in's one by one to see if you can isolate the offender.

Disabling any add-ins is a good first step. It may not be an add-in though (it probably is). Code in your AutoOpen, AutoNew can cause this, although in most cases the actual offending code is in some sort of add-in.

Remove (copy them some place else) all .DOT files in your Startup folder.

There are TWO Startup folders.

One applies to a specific user: it is under Document and Settings\username\Application Data\yaddayadda

The actual path may differ, but it will be under Doc and Settings\username.

The other is a Startup folder under Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office num\Startup

Any .DOT files here apply to all users on the machine.

Another test is to start Word in Safe Mode, and see if you get that error. If you do...you are in big trouble.
