My Word 2003 became slow to startup versus when I call it with the /a switch (~3 seconds vs. ~40 seconds).

After reading this article:

I thought maybe I would find a bad template. I did not.

I have removed known add-ins and yet the problem persists.

I do NOT receive any errors and Word functions fine.

However, I'd really like to solve this since this slow-start affects each document I load as well.

I suspect Normal.DOT is the problem, but I don't know how to research that. Help appreciated!

If you think Normal.dot is the problem, then just rename it and Word will create a new one at the next startup.

Have you made sure your anti-virus is not blocking Word?

Are all your network drives connected?

Make sure all your Word temp files are non-existant or delete them.

Do you have Allow Fast Save turned on? Word will slow down each time you open a doc with that turned on.

Is it just one doc or many that manifest this problem?

I guess more questions than answers. But, cèst la vie.

I found a ~Normal.dot in the same folder as Normal.dot. I couldn't account for it and deleted it.

Did NOT help.

My Normal.dot was 12MB. I renamed it to Normal.dot.old

That DID HELP.

Hopefully I haven't broken anything. Thanks.

YIKES!!!!!

No wonder Word was slow! Even a 1 Mb normal.dot is hugely and dangerously bloated.

My normal.dot is < 0.05 Mb (45K).

What on earth do you have in there?????
