word 2003 SLOW ! please help

Hey, I'm having a problem with MS word 2003. I am running win2000 pro and when ever I use Word my computer slows to a crawl. It become almost impossible to do anything on the machine. As soon as word is closed, the computer is allowed to speed up again. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be the cause?

Open task manager ("ctrl,shift,escape" at the same time) and see how many instances of WINWORD.EXE are running under the procceses tab obviously there should only be 1, if there is then in word there should be a compatability tab somewhere check that also maybee try different combinations. Ours is always set to word97 compatability
