How can you set up word so it doesn't automatically save a title for a new document? I know you can go to Options: Save, and there's a checkbox for "prompt for document properties" but is there a way to set it up to have a blank title?

I dont think this is possible with latest versions of Word, this is used for file recovery reasons. Previously it would always name files as Document1, Document2 etc, but for ease of retrieving files should they go missing, or Word terminates, then you can track your files as Word will save it with the first few words or lines of text etc within the document - This is really a great help.

Word will not let you have a blank title in its file name, even applications like Excel will have "Book1" etc, this is because Windows will not allow save of a document without a name.

You might, in some instances be able to "Disable functions after Word97" from the Save options, but even this will still default to "Doc1" on your Save As page.

You could simply save the document before you start typing anything.

Sorry I should have been more clear, I'm talking about the document title, not the document name. The problem is that most users don't even know or see that Word saved a Title. It does this automatically and I can't figure out how to turn it off.

What is actually happening is that Word takes the first piece of text, and uses that as the Title. It is indeed automatic. Just like Author is added to the document properties. Automatically.

I do not know a way to turn this off, but someone else may.

If you particularly do not want this, then I would in fact check Prompt for document properties. At least then they will get the Properties dialog, and they can change the Title, or any other property.

Alternatively, you can explicitly make the Title blank using VBA on the Save command. Or explicitly make it blank using a separate procedure.
