Word 2003 hangs when selecting data source..

When I try to select the data source for a mail merge in Word 2003 on Windows XP Pro, it takes about 30 seconds for the drop down menu to drop down. I have taken several items out of the startup through msconfig but this still has not solved the problem. Can someone please help with this?
