In Microsoft Word 2003, I'm using a standard novel format for manuscripts.

At the end of a paragraph which is, for example, a change of scene, the characters ### are centered on a line by themselves.

I then want to hit enter and go to the next paragraph of the new scene.

The kicker is that the next paragraph must not be indented. Each paragraph after the first one is then indented five spaces (i.e., by tab).

How do I do this?

Thank you for your time.

There are two guaranteed rules of success: First, never tell everything you know.

Hi judgehopkins,

Create three paragraph Styles:
'EndScene'
'NewScene'
'SameScene'

Configure the 'EndScene' Style for a centered paragraph with the following paragraph Style set to 'NewScene'. Then, when you use the 'EndScene' Style and hit <Enter>, the next paragraph will have the 'NewScene' Style with desired (non) indenting.

Similarly, configure the 'NewScene' Style for a paragraph with no indents and the following paragraph Style set to 'SameScene'. Then, when you use the 'EndScene' Style and hit <Enter>, the next paragraph will have the 'SameScene' Style with desired indenting.

Finally, configure the 'SameScene' Style for a paragraph with the required indent and the following paragraph Style also set to 'SameScene'. Then, when you use the 'SameScene' Style and hit <Enter>, the next paragraph will likewise have the 'SameScene' Style with desired indenting.

Cheers
