Word 2002 unpredictable?

I have noticed that the Word 2002 toolbar button "Bullets" now applies a style (great idea: why was a bullet list ever styled "normal" before?)

Trouble is, as I've built my templates all sorts of style names are appearing in the toolbar style box when I click this button. Yes, I get bullets, but sometimes it's been Bullet list 3! Worse, when I defined a style for bullets in a bordered paragraph, this appears to have attached itself to the Bullets button (its name is in the box), but gives me unbordered bullets in my text!

I have also been playing with the new feature of "Auto" spacing after paragraphs. Great: I get 6pt spacing in bullet lists. Just what I wanted, AND it adds 12pts after when I finish the list. Perfect. But why, when I create a style for the same bullets with a border around them does this auto spacing revert to 0pts after?? Or, when I have auto spacing after a normal paragraph, do I get about 18pts space between the para and a list?

Is it really a feature now, that a para with 12pts after, followed by a heading with 6pts before, these are no longer additive? To get 18pts between a para and a heading I have to set 12pts after the para but 18pts before on the heading?

Any experience and advice would be most reassuring and helpful!
