Word 2002 tracking feature

I am trying to help a colleague with a Word 2002 problem. We have this document that has been revised by other people and sent back and forth with the tracking feature turned on. We received the final copy yesterday. Now something weird happens. On the left side of the tracking toolbar where it shows "Original", "Final", "Final markup". Now when you see the original, it does not correspond to the original. When I found the final desired version, opened it, copied and pasted it into a new document, the new document shows with all of the tracking formatting (lines, changes, or so forth). I updated Office XP to SP3 in case that could fix anything but it still there. Any suggestions?
