Word 2002 pointer 'gets smart' and changes the font size

I've got an Acre Aspire, nice little machine. One trouble, the pointer occasionally turns into a four-armed symbol changes the size of my display. I've not come across anything like it before. Can anyone advise?

I've looked through all the Word options to see if I can switch it off. Also the Mouse controls on the Windows Control Pannel, I run Windows XP.
