Whenever I open one of my own Word documents, the software holds me up for a minute or two, showing the following message on the status bar
Requesting virus scan...
My machine is already properly scanned for viruses, and anyway these are my own documents. Most of them don't even have macros in them. (I also have Macro security set to 'low', because I wouldn't anyway open a Word document from a souce I could not trust.)

Please could someone advise how I could stop it doing this?

Word does not do nor never has done any scanning at all. It's your AV app that is doing the scanning. So open the settings for your AV and turn off document scan. The setting may be described and labelled in many ways depending on your AV from an Office Plug-in to simply a setting labelled Scan Documents.

Thanks. I've got Norton anti-virus and can't find anything that looks relevant. But I guess I should post again in the correct forum.

COrrection, I found it under 'miscellaneous'. After closing Word and then re-starting it, the problem was gone.

I have same timewasting problem with MS 2007. Now sorted, thanks. Because the message appears in the MS Word frame it looks as if it's part of Word. It was actually part of Norton AV. The full procedure for Norton is: open Norton. Select Options, then Miscellaneous & de-select' Enable Office Plug-in'. Brilliant, thanks GwydionM and tf1.

Oh yes, I remember when I used to have Word and Norton on the same machine at home. Back then, the gerbils would get sick from pushing so hard on the hamster wheels. Well, I got rid of Norton... and the Gerbils and wheels altogether. [bigglasses]
