Word 2002 changes my documents to symbols and boxes

why does my document turn into funny symbols and boxes?
it will happen when i leave it (word) open for a while and when i come back to it, parts of my documents turn into the symbols and i can't turn them back unless i re-open the document. that is if i was lucky enough to save it first before it happens.

anybody seen this before?

I don't really have a fix for you but...

I used to have a similar problem with document characters changing typeface. I noticed that if I blocked the characters that changed (go to the first character, press the left mouse button, and drag down to the last character) the blocked characters displayed the right typeface. I later changed my video card (not for this reason) and the problem didn't return. If you have an extra video card laying around yo may want to give it a chance.
